Equipment

Some clinics do not require equipment. Please refer to the clinic or program information for details.

For programs and team membership the player must provide his/her own equipment. Equipment for male players is as follows:

Note that the equipment is specific to lacrosse and names should not be confused with its football equivalent.

  • Helmet: Cascade helmets. Pro 7 suggested. Other Cascade helmets are Ok for younger players
  • Mouth guard
  • Lacrosse stick (Attack / Middies’ stick, Defensemen stick or Goalie stick) all new players should start with attack/middie sticks. The STX AV-8 is a good beginner stick.
  • Arm guards
  • Shoulder pads
  • Gloves
  • Goalies add throat guard and chest protection.
  • Athletic supporter and cup.

There will be equipment sizing days during the late fall and winter. I and the coaches will have sample helmets and pads to try on. For the new player, we will offer a starter package that has helmet, stick, arm pads, shoulder pads and gloves. The cost will be approximately $200 for the set. We worked out a deal with a distributer and are carrying the savings on to you.

If you want to get a start, I suggest you purchase a stick before that so you can practice. As I prefer that all players have their gloves on while handling their stick, I suggest getting gloves as well.

Upgrades:

For most players who enter their second year, the temptation is to spend hundreds on a stick and over $100 on gloves. I fully understand the appeal of buying what the college guys use. However, the lower and medium priced sticks, shafts and gloves are outstanding.

For instance, the STX AV-8 stick is a great stick for any age. The more advanced heads are geared to have more accurate passing and ball holding characteristics. However, this makes them very difficult to catch with. This more expensive type stick and pocket will only frustrate the beginner and intermediate player. If one shows that they are very proficient with their skills, an upgrade makes sense.

Those that play defense, I stress that they do not buy an expensive stick or head. The long six foot shaft puts the head further out and makes catching a bit more difficult. A wider head like a beginners head is used even throughout High School by many Defenseman.

I play defense so I can help in any decisions if you need it.

Also, the long stick tends to break or bend. I would not buy a stick over $60 for a defenseman. Attack and midfielders will like the more expensive lighter shafts but I would hold off until their second or third year before they send more than what an average stick will cost.

Coach Elliott is well versed in all pockets and heads so ask his advise if you want to upgrade. However, please refrain until you can show us you are proficient in your stick skills.

Goalies, e-mail me. I been through it all with my son who is a goalie so we can help guide you.

Colors: Stay with Black and you cannot go wrong. Our colors are Columbia Blue and Black . There are some gloves in those colors but you will spend over $100. The STX K-18 in Columbia Blue is $150.00. Note that Columbia Blue and Black are Johns Hopkins colors if you are searching for the correct colors. We are NOT Carolina Blue or Navy or Royal Blue. If you can not find Columbia blue, get black.

Coaches Needed
Merritt Island Lacrosse is in need of coaches for the 2011 season. Prior coaching experience in lacrosse is great but not necessary.  Coaching experience with basketball, football, or any other sport is fine - we can teach you this exciting game.  Also, if you want to help and have never coached, that is fine.  Contact Al Dolente at milacrosse@yahoo.com for more info.
